Why Your Injury Keeps Coming Back
If you’re like most people we see, this isn’t the first thing you’ve tried. You rested. You followed YouTube rehab videos. You went to physical therapy where you were rushed through generic exercises.
Maybe you even tried injections or pain meds. And yet… the same issue keeps showing up. That’s because most approaches focus on where it hurts, not why it’s happening.
Pain is usually the symptom—not the problem.
Until you identify what’s actually driving the issue (how you move, load, recover, and train), the pain may calm down temporarily—but it almost always returns once you get back to normal life or training. That’s the injury–reinjury cycle.
Our approach starts by finding the root cause and building a clear, outcome-based plan to fix it—so you’re not stuck managing the same issue year after year.
A Message From Dr. Matt Buch, DPT, OCS, Owner and Founder of Total Pursuit Physical Therapy & Performance in the Green Bay Area
It can be tempting to underestimate the severity of a sports injury and attempt to persevere through the discomfort. However, it is crucial to seek professional evaluation and treatment.
Alternatively, it can be incredibly disheartening and give rise to a sense of feeling confined, questioning whether you will ever be able to engage in sports or maintain your previous activity level.
If you are in this situation, please know you are not alone. We regularly encounter individuals facing these challenges at Total Pursuit, our physiotherapy center, regardless of the season.
We find it absurd when doctors and healthcare professionals advise patients to “rest” when they sustain an injury. This advice often leads to further harm and increases the risk of future injuries. Resting causes our muscles to weaken and waste away. Consequently, numerous individuals suffering from sports injuries are left pondering:
"Why Am I Still Enduring This Injury, Preventing Me From Being Active And Enjoying My Favorite Sport, Even After Months?"
It is a common misconception that a few days of rest will suffice to heal a sports injury, allowing individuals to swiftly return to their regular exercise regimen. However, upon attempting to resume physical activity, many find themselves experiencing heightened pain compared to before. While there may be minimal to no pain during rest periods, as soon as they exercise again, the pain resurfaces and fails to improve regardless of the duration of their breaks.
Do You Find Yourself In A Similar Situation?
A scenario we frequently encounter in our clinic involves patients’ doctors advising them to rest and “try these pain relievers” to observe any improvements. However, when these patients return to the doctor after four weeks, they discover that the injury has not improved. In response, they are instructed to rest even more and given another prescription for even more medication.
The challenge with sports injuries is that rest alone is often not the most effective remedy. If you feel frustrated after receiving conflicting information from different sources, please know you are not alone. It is easy to confuse a back injury with a hip problem since they can exhibit similar symptoms.
Sports injuries often get misdiagnosed because the pain originates from a different area than the one that requires attention. Prolonged rest periods can also weaken other body parts, making them susceptible to injury.
Regrettably, the uncertainty surrounding the effectiveness of “resting” often leads to further procrastination and avoidance of decisions that could facilitate the healing process and enable a return to regular exercise. Even worse, many individuals simply accept that they can no longer be physically active as if it is normal or unavoidable.
Can You Relate To Any Of These Experiences?
If You're Currently Experiencing Frustration And Living With A Sports Injury, Here Are Seven More Reasons Why It May Be Lasting Longer Than Expected:
- You believed it would resolve on its own, but it persisted.
- You visited a doctor who advised you to rest, wear a support, and take painkillers. However, the medication provided little relief, and once its effects wore off, you found yourself in excruciating pain again.
- A family member or friend convinced you that sports injuries are more common as one ages, causing you to accept your situation.
- You sought help from other healthcare professionals or physiotherapists in the past, but their advice or treatments didn’t seem to make a difference.
- You attempted to alleviate the pain by using heating pads, ice, or sports supports, only to find that they neither provided significant relief nor improved your ability to return to exercise comfortably.
- Due to intense pain, you thought resting would be a good idea, but it continues to bother you daily.
- You opted for “sports massages,” hoping they would resolve the pain, but they only provided temporary relief or relaxation without addressing the underlying injury.
If any of these scenarios resonate with you, we invite you to schedule a call with one of our physical therapists to explore how we can assist you. You are already one step closer to finding a solution by trying these various methods!

What Can You Do To Get Rid Of Sports Injury?
Here are four steps you can take:
- Make a proactive decision to seek help: Many individuals delay addressing their problems, hoping the pain will eventually fade over time. However, if you’ve been enduring the pain for six months or worsening, it’s important to take action. Inactivity from sports or physical activity can become the norm if left unaddressed.
- Perform the appropriate exercises: A physical therapist will guide you through specific exercises tailored to your condition. When done correctly, these exercises can expedite your recovery, alleviate pain, and restore your freedom of movement.
- Avoid excessive rest: Rest is crucial for recovery, but too much rest can hinder progress. While some believe complete inactivity is necessary for healing, it impedes blood circulation, which is vital for recovery. Your body needs a combination of appropriate rehabilitation exercises, strength training, and hands-on therapy to effectively treat your condition and restore your ability to be active.
- Benefit from hands-on Physical Therapy: Therapeutic massage and hands-on therapy have been proven to assist individuals with sports injuries. Total Pursuit Physical Therapy & Performance specializes in helping people recover from sports-related ailments throughout the year. Suppose your injury prevents you from participating in sports, affecting your work or daily life, or limiting your time with loved ones. EXCELLENT Based on 123 reviews Posted on Google Devan PavlicekTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I saught out a PT after a reaggravated a long term back injury in an attempt to properly address the issue and come out with a long term recovery plan. After working with Matt for the last couple months, I can wholeheartedly say it was the best decision I made and I cannot recommend Matt enough. From day one, we sat down and assessed the injury and came up with a gameplan. I made clear my intentions and what I was looking for and Matt listened and outlined a complete timeline of what he looked to do each session, and summarized the recovery from start to finish. Throughout the process, he was always intently looking to me for feedback to ensure I was getting everything I was looking for and inquiring if I wanted to pivot or tweak the scope of a session. Not only is Matt extremely attentive, he's very communicative and willing to give video feedback in real time and correct form/technique to better serve you in long term recovery. Dont hesitate to give Matt and Total Pursuit a try!Posted on Google Aaron BergerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I was born with infant torticollis and I had neck and middle back pains along with my hips needing to be adjusted. Been going to the chiropractor for 16 years and I feel way more relief now that I have been seeing Dr. Matt. Even after this huge blizzard we just had, I would normally feel a lot of lower back pain and I had minimal soreness after shoveling and snow blowing the last couple days. Would highly recommend! 👍🏻Posted on Google Jonathan ValdezTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I needed help. Had a bad sciatic episode this past winter where walking was a chore. With Dr buch's expertise and the exercises we worked on, I was able to enjoy the latter part of the ice fishing season pain free. Highly recommend them!Posted on Google Randy PaffTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Matt customized my therapy to really fit my progress and goals. I could not sleep on my shoulder and was in pain with simple tasks such as putting on a jacket or backpack. I am nearly pain free now and my strength is coming back as well. I am 61 and again participating in activities I thought I may have to give up such as bow hunting. Thanks MattPosted on Google Kurt NiskaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dr Matt is exceptional! I herniated two discs in my lower back and went through 8 months of insurance approved PT through my doctor, including three rounds of steroid treatments (two oral and one spinal). While I certainly had made progress and appreciated the care I received, I had no idea how to avoid injury again or what to do next. After months of searching, I met Dr Matt at a wellness event and booked a consultation. How wonderful to find someone willing to guide an ordinary Joe to strengthen and rehabilitate beyond simply being functional! Dr Matt is patient, responsive, thorough, and clearly explains what we’re doing and how it applies. Thank you, Dr Matt, for helping me get stronger and regain confidence in what my body is capable of doing. I know my journey is not complete but I am grateful to have you and your expertise in my corner.Posted on Google Brandon HarrellTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I went to see Dr. Matt after struggling with back issues for years and finding little relief through traditional treatments. From the initial assessment, he took a thorough and thoughtful approach. Instead of just addressing symptoms, he focused on improving strength and stability in the areas surrounding my back that had been neglected due to long-term pain. The results have been tremendous. I’m stronger, more stable, and finally moving in the right direction. I highly recommend Dr. Matt to anyone dealing with ongoing issues.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
